Facts about underage drinking in New York state:
# Close to 1.4 million (57 percent) of youths ages 12 to 20
have used alcohol in their lifetime.
# 1.2 million (50 percent) people in that age group used
alcohol in the past year.
# 763,000 (32 percent) used alcohol in the past month.
# 168,000 (7 percent) used alcohol heavily in the past month.
# 225,000 (9 percent) reported dependence or abuse in the
past year.
# 904,000 (66 percent) children in grades 7 through 12
reported having a drink in their lifetime.
# 340,000 (25 percent) children in that age group consumed
five or more drinks at one time at least once a month.
# More than 500,000 (37 percent) had a drink of alcohol at
least once a month.
